Is A Fall Furnace Tune-up Really Necessary?

Don't ever doubt that you need a fall furnace tune-up performed each year, because you do need one, and we’re here to tell you about the some of the benefits you may have been missing out on.

Fall furnace tune-ups are vital to having a durable furnace. Having pre-season preventive maintenance done also helps you throughout the winter; promising uninterrupted heating and avoiding system breakdown just when they need their heat the most.

No matter what winter brings to Dallas this year, you’ll know that your furnace will perform time and again and without fail if you have had a fall furnace tune-up.

Trane Gas Furnace
Why the timing of your tune-up is important

The timing of a tune-up matters for a variety of reasons:

Air conditioning and heating companies are often at their busiest once winter arrives and homeowners run their furnaces around the clock. At this time, people who forgot to make appointments will be rushing to schedule preventive maintenance. Other homeowners’ furnaces will break down, and they’ll call their contractors to schedule repairs. For all of these reasons, if you call for maintenance once winter is in full swing, you may have to wait for an appointment.
During the fall season, however, HVAC contractors are squarely focused on making room for tune-ups, which is generally the most common type of appointment. As a result, scheduling a tune-up now will ensure that your furnace receives attention, and that it is in good working condition -- before you have to fire it up.

What your heating technician should do during a fall furnace tune-up

Before you can understand the benefits that a tune-up affords, it’s helpful to know what a heating technician will do during preventive maintenance.

Typically, a tune-up includes a full-scale inspection of the system to identify problem areas and replace machinery that is beginning to wear out.
The technician will carry out a comprehensive cleaning of the complete furnace system, making sure that dirt buildup is removed so that friction and wear and tear are reduced, enhancing the efficiency of the furnace.
The technician also will inspect the condition of components, such as the ductwork and any add-ons like humidifiers or air cleaners.

How you’ll benefit from regular annual service

It’s generally true that the more often you have annual service performed, the more you’re likely to benefit from the service. But even if you’ve neglected to service your furnace for a few years, you can still get in on its benefits by starting regular service now. These benefits include:

Better furnace efficiency – Your system can only reach -- or come near to -- manufacturer expectations if it’s clean. In fact, dirt is generally the No. 1 enemy of efficiency, as dirt that rests on components like the motor, air handler or heat exchanger creates friction, causes the system to consume more energy and increases wear and tear.
Improved comfort – When dirt buildup is left unchecked, it starts to wreak havoc within the system. As efficiency decreases, the furnace’s capacity to generate heat decreases, impacting other components like the air handler’s ability to push heated air into your home. As a result, you may notice that some of the rooms in your home aren’t as comfortable as they used to be, or you just aren’t as warm in your home as you’ve been in the past. But a clean system will operate at peak capacity, and provide optimal home comfort.
Extended life – A furnace system should generally last around 15 years. However, manufacturers assign a furnace an expected life span under ideal conditions, meaning you must maintain the furnace to achieve those expectations. However, most HVAC experts believe homeowners can extend that life span even further with annual maintenance. In fact, you can generally achieve a longer life span by up to five years, just by investing in a fall furnace tune-up each year.
Low lifetime costs – The amount that you paid for your furnace does not represent the overall costs related to operating it. Taking operating costs into account gives you a more accurate idea of lifetime costs. And with regular maintenance, you can ensure that you keep lifetime costs low, because a clean, lubricated system wards off wear and tear and component failure, keeping repair costs low -- or even non-existent -- and energy savings high.

Convinced that this is the year you should start scheduling a fall furnace tune-up? Beat the rush for service, and contact Chapman Air & Heat to make an appointment. Serving homeowners in Dallas TX and its surrounding areas, we are large enough to serve you, and small enough to care.

Whats The Best SEER???

WHAT’S BEST??? High efficient air conditioning systems that cost more up front or the bare minimum efficient unit that cost less, perhaps considerably less but MORE????

Latest nationwide studies are showing that lower end efficiency units are still chosen over the higher end efficiency units. One can’t argue that the current state of our economy has affected consumer purchasing but dealers may very well be responsible for less efficient units being purchased. Why is this? Perhaps it is because we assume this is all the consumer can afford or because a cheap price sells a lot faster than a higher price. Perhaps it is because the manufacturer found the loop-hole to make units and ship dry of Freon so consumers can still just replace their outdoor unit that utilizes Freon R-22 and keep their old indoor equipment. Last but not least, perhaps lower end equipment is offered due to the fact the dealer is not educated themselves on offering higher efficient equipment and what it does and how it saves money for the customer. In other words, what is there to “sale” with low end equipment?

As dealers, are we doing right by our customers by offering a cheap easy solution? Does the customer have all the facts how this purchase will be impacted as R-22 keeps being phased out and the price keeps soaring? Do they understand that?
  • Higher efficient units offer immediate relief on utility bills
  • Higher efficient units offer a stellar level of comfort
  • Higher efficient units are dependable, requires far less service
  • Dry units are the very minimum 13 SEER which offer no measurable energy savings
  • Dry R-22 units are just band aids and probably, sooner than later, will need to be replaced with the more efficient 410-A systems.

Still, are we (dealers) truly helping the customer? Let me answer that for you, NO.

Let’s hear from the customer…What do you want?

Positive Things to Say about Our Leader, Boss, Head Honcho…?

The Big Cheese
More times than not, you hear employees complain about their working conditions, under appreciated, over-worked and on and on. Finally, they identify who they perceive as causing their problems…surprise, surprise, their boss.
However, here at Chapman we see things differently and yes; the problem is our boss, Marvin Chapman…but in a good way! After asking around, here are a few things Chapman employees in the field and in the office had to say.
  •  He’s the first one in and the last one out
  • Allows you to express yourself, even when you may be upset
  • More than fair
  • Encourages us to act like we own the business
  • Able to make the hard calls
  • Good voice of reasoning
  • Positive and supportive
  • Places value on his employees
  • Always makes time for you
  • Listens tentatively and offers suggestions
  • Excellent referee between co-workers
  • Door is always open-doesn’t hide behind a desk
  • Gets in the trenches with us
  • Takes the high road
  • Fix the problem, not the blame attitude
  • Encourages working as a team, being a family
  • Big heart, genuinely cares for the staff
  • Promotes being the best you can be
  • Communication is always welcomed, positive or negative and that is valued.
Marvin Chapman
Since a person spends so much of their time at work, it is extremely important to have a positive environment. Being in a service business, it may be even more important to have a positive work environment as your customers can pick up on the type of attitude an employee has on the phone or at their home.  Several of our customers have commented on how an employee spoke highly of his company and the leader.
All companies have their share of problems and we are no different. However, how you are lead speaks volumes and we happen to be a company who appreciates the type of leader we have.
What do you think about your work environment? We would like to hear about all those great bosses out there!

So….what’s the deal with the windmill?

So….what’s the deal with the windmill?  Ever noticed the tiny little windmill within the red circle on our Chapman Logo? Well, neither have I.  I mean, I see it every day, on our trucks, on our invoices, everywhere. But, I never really thought about the windmill and its significance to our business or to our industry. I guess I just always assumed it represented sort of a giant fan. That’s perfect for an air-conditioning business, right? Wrong!  When I went to the source (aka Mr. Chapman) and asked him how he came up with the idea for the logo I was a little surprised at his answer.

I was ready to hear all about the “history of windmills” from Mr. C. (um, you have to know him). So, I did a smidge of research first. Seems they were first used in Persia in 600 AD. They actually used sails as opposed to blades to catch the wind in order to grind grain. Europeans began using them by the 1100’s for grinding grain as well as for pumping water. The American windmill began to be used in the 1800’s by farmers. This version had blades made of wood or steel. They were used to pump water for farm animals and some were even used to provide water for household use. And that brings us to the modern windmill that is used today to produce electricity. They are called “wind turbines” and are used today all over the United States.

Windmills in West Texas
Preliminary Logo Designs
So, what does all of this have to do with our little logo? Not much, actually. Mr. Chapman says that he came up with the idea for the logo from a photo he took on a family vacation driving through west Texas.  On one of the many (he emphasized many) pit stops for the little ones, he shot a picture of a windmill with the sun setting directly behind it. It turned out to be a great shot and became of sort of a family favorite.

So, when he began his business in 1981, and family members began to weigh in on what it should be called, logos, etc.; someone brought up that photo. So, he thought, “windmills = fans, energy, air-conditioning…that’ll work.”  So, he designed a little graphic that mimicked the photo.  And we have used the same logo (at times in a different color) ever since.

So, what did I learn? While the windmill may represent energy, and we are in the “energy saving” business, it was not the inspiration for the logo. It was more inspired by family, which is fitting, as we are a family business with over 30 years of history and still going.

DRY AIR CAUSING STUFFINESS AND DRYING OUT WOOD IN YOUR HOME?

If your answer is “yes”, read this….

The most convenient way to do away with dry winter air is to install a whole house steam humidifier. We recommend Honeywell’s TrueSTEAM because it is simply the best.

When winter rolls around, you not only have to deal with the cold temperatures but also with the dry air the season inevitably brings. Dry air in your home can cause or contribute to several uncomfortable physical conditions such as itchy skin, nose bleeds, irritated throats and breathing troubles. Apart from physical problems, excessive dry air can also damage your home, causing warping of paneling, floors and furniture. And, can damage fine paintings. A whole house steam humidifier can help prevent these unwanted winter conditions.

An often overlooked characteristic of dry interior air is that it makes you feel colder than the actual temperature of the room. This happens because dry air absorbs moisture from your skin. When moisture evaporates away from your body, you cool down, much like the effect you feel when cooling off after sweating. Too much dry air in your house will make you feel colder even if you have your furnace set at a relatively high level.

A whole house steam humidification system will effectively relieve conditions caused by dry air. With better humidity levels in the air, you are more comfortable in your home
Why Honeywell’s TrueSTEAM ?
  • Moisture on Demand - TrueSTEAM works by producing its own steam independent of equipment operation, so your home gets moisture when you need it most.
  • Eco-Friendly - TrueSTEAM is the most eco-friendly way to humidify your home, because for every 1 gallon of water used, 1 gallon of humidification is produced.
  • "True Steam" - While other humidifiers rely on moisture-filled pads that can be susceptible to bacteria growth in the water and the airstream, TrueSTEAM delivers "true steam" - the cleanest form of humidification.
  • Out of Sight, Out of Mind - TrueSTEAM is installed out-of-sight by your heating and cooling professional into your home's central heating and cooling system. You can forget about having to fill clunky, portable units, because TrueSTEAM automatically fills itself.
  • Whole-House Solution - Installs directly or remotely to your furnace to deliver moisture throughout your entire home.
  • Minimal Maintenance - Simply clean once a year with soap and water and the rest of the time it cleans itself automatically.
  • 5-Year Warranty

Since 1981, Marvin Chapman, the Founder of Chapman Air & Heat has provided the Dallas/Fort Worth custom homebuilder market with luxury home comfort systems and installations. We have engineered, designed and installed thousands of custom homes from 5,000 sq. ft. to well over 20,000 sq.ft.  And…with a mechanical engineer on staff, each individual home is given complete attention to details.

Sometimes the most important design elements of a new home are the ones that are unseen; unlike Italian marble countertops, solid oak wood floors or imported iron staircases that catch your eye as soon as the door opens. For the most part, the air conditioning and heating system along with the air ducts is hidden away, out of sight. Our systems may be unseen but the comfort we provide will definitely be noticed.

Customer Service is Key

We have always heard that keeping an existing customer costs less overall than trying to solicit new business. We also know that if we concentrate all our efforts on that while our competition is focusing on gaining new customers we will eventually lose. Obviously, we have to do both. But, we will leave marketing to the experts and go with what we know. How do we retain our existing customers?

A.                   Quality.  Of course, you have to offer a great product and service at fair prices.  That’s a given.

B.                    Convenience. Let’s face it; it is one of the most challenging aspects of a service company. Serving our customers, in a timely manner, trying to accommodate their schedule without staying open 24/7 is not an easy feat. And in peak seasons when demand for service is high, it gets even more challenging. But, it is almost a mantra at Chapman Air “we will not lose a customer because we could not meet their scheduling request.”

C.                   Care. It is the most essential element. First of all, it is impossible to deliver A or B without C. Even though we strive for 100% on all points, if we miss the mark at all a caring attitude can go a long way in resolving problems.  A customer will recognize and appreciate genuine concern when they see it. We believe this is why we at Chapman Air & Heat have retained so many customers these past 30 + years!

HOLY MACKEREL - What's up with Freon?

HOLY MACKEREL!!!!! The cost of R-22 FREON for central air conditioners has blasted into orbit within the last few weeks. Yes, we all knew this was coming but folks, it is here. After checking with several supply houses, we also were told A/C companies may be rationed on the number of drums purchased. Can you say “demand”? We have thousands upon thousands of homeowners whose A/C units require R-22. This is not a small price increase, this is a HUGE price increase should your unit need to be repaired. So, if you have an A/C unit that has given you problems in the past, you need to prepare for expensive repairs if you choose to keep repairing.

As you may recall, as of January 1, 2010, manufacturers could no longer make and ship units using R-22. All new units made and shipped come with 410-A Freon (Eco-friendly) since that date. However, manufacturers could make the units and ship “dry” (no Freon) and R-22 could be added in the field by the contractor. This filled a certain need for customers who only wanted an outdoor unit installed with the use of R-22. What was not taken into consideration (or maybe it was) was the cost of R-22. As R-22 Freon continues being phased out, the price will keep rising.

Things that are most important to do are make sure your unit is in tip top shape by having annual tune-ups, keep filters changed or cleaned as required and report any problems as soon as you know one exists. The best plan is to plan ahead to replace R-22 units. You will pay more upfront for a new air conditioning system that is in compliance with the EPA 410-A regulation but you will enjoy energy savings, better indoor comfort and no worries about Freon being phased out anytime soon.

Revamped website

Well, we have finally done it. We have finished revamping our website, and I am pretty pleased with how it came out. The main reason for re-doing it was to make it more user friendly, as well as tackle some issues brought about by the Google Panda. We had to take a careful look at ourselves and our message. We are providing air conditioning service and repair, and our old website had become more geared to the techie out there, rather than that father whose furnace just gave its dying breath at 2 in the morning. So we wanted our site to be able to give him answers right off the bat. you need service/ BAM we got service.

We have technicians 24 hours a day, and we have someone on the phones 24 hours a day. No automated jargon. At the same time we still wanted to be a source of information for those who have relied on us in the provision of technical expertise, manuals and diagrams. We believe to have come up with the best marriage between those two aspects of our company, and this new site should cater and be more friendly to all. Well take a look and please let us know where we could improve it..

Here is a screenshot of the new site. The menu options we decided to lay along the top as we believed this would be easier for that first time visitor.

Below is our old site, in all its glory, and as you can probably tell - you needed a guide to go through that site. That is what sometimes happens when you are too close to something. It makes sense to you, but to someone else, it might be a little tricky.

So, there you have it. Our new and improved website, found at www.chapmanair.com, please let us know what you think.

Link Building for Air Conditioning Companies

SUMMARY:
Link building is an important aspect of search engine optimization. Search engines view a link as a vote of confidence in a website or webpage. The more links from related sources the greater the webpage's importance.

Link building is an important aspect of search engine optimization. Search engines view a link as a vote of confidence in a website or webpage. The more links from related sources the greater the web page's importance.

When requesting links, use an email template that can be easily customized for specific requests. To locate prospective link partners, search Google or Yahoo for related keywords or phrases.

When looking for partners, use this no-nonsense guide to request links from related websites.

Related
The content on the webpage you would like to link to should be related to the content of your page. However, competitors are unlikely to be willing link partners, regardless of the quality of your website. Look for websites that are related but not competing. As an example, if you are an Air Conditioning Contractor then you could could link to related businesses like, roofers, builders, sheet metal suppliers or home remodellers. Adding a link to a wholesale reseller of handmade ostrich skin boots would definitely not be advised.

Current
The content on the website you are requesting the link from should be up to date like the air conditioning coupons here. A new link on a page with a lot of outdated or inaccurate content will not typically benefit your website (or reputation).

Valuable The content on the website you are requesting the link from should also contain valuable and unique content. This goes both ways; if you want people to link to your website, you must also provide useful content. This is very hard to do in the Air Conditioning and Heating industry - as most of the technology takes a while to change or get upgraded.

Seek Quality
Only request links from quality websites. If a website is cluttered with advertisements and is not a quality website, it is unlikely that the search engines will not value the link much. Make every effort to seek out quality websites.

When sending an email request be sure to include the following:

Personalize
Personalize the email request, be sure to mention the domain of interest and perhaps a specific web page for the link exchange. Personalizing the email will help the reader discern that your email is legitimate. This would also show the prospective link that you have been to their website, you are a human, and not an automated bot request from a link farm.

Compliment
Describe what you like about the website (be specific). Tell the webmaster that you feel their website has value, and that is why you would like a link to them and why they would like a link to you.

Explain
Explain why a link to your website would be relevant and beneficial to a specific website visitors. In your email request, detail how customers would benefit from the information on your website.

Be Specific
Provide specific anchor text and the exact web page URL and web page description on your website that you would like the webmaster to link to. Reciprocate and Thank If appropriate provide details about any links back that you have provided to the website. Also, be sure to thank the webmaster for considering the request.

Building links is an important aspect to increase the popularity of a website.

Is it Time to Fire up Your Home Furnace?

As the weather begins to change and we bid farewell to summer, its time to start thinking about one of the most important pieces of equipment in your home: the furnace. Most homeowners forget about the furnace until it is too late, and, if you had any problems with yours last winter, then now is definitely the time to take action.

Waiting to fire up your furnace until you actually need it could cause problems. It happens every year, the first cold snap hits and the phones at the heating and air conditioning companies light up and many people find themselves going a few days without heat as they compete with every other homeowner with furnace issues for an appointment. Don’t be left out in the cold, act now.

Heating systems are usually reliable and require very little repair if they are given regular maintenance. But without this regular maintenance a furnace could lose efficiency or cease to function all together.

To give your furnace and heating system a test run, set the thermostat at least five degrees warmer than the current temperature in the room. In a minute or two your heater should come on and you should be able to feel the heat blowing into the room. If the system does not come on you can check a few things before calling in a pro.

The first place to look is the thermostat. It may sound simple, but check to see that it is turned on. All modern thermostats have an on off switch, but they may not be clearly labeled with an “on” position. The “on” position is usually labeled “heat” or “cool.” Obviously you want to make sure the switch is in the “heat” position. If you have a programmable thermostat, refer to your user manual on how to bypass the current setting. If the heater still does not come on you’ll want to check to see if your thermostat has a replaceable battery and check it. There is nothing worse than paying one hundred and fifty bucks or more for a service technician come out to the house just to change a battery.

If your heater still does not fire up, look for an on/off switch at the furnace itself. It looks just like a light switch and is often attached to the unit itself, or very nearby. Make sure the switch is on. If your switch is on and the furnace has still yet to run, check the breakers in your electric panel. The breaker could have tripped and the solution to the problem could be as easy as flipping the switch. If all switches are on, and you are certain you have paid all your gas / electric bills then its time to call in the experts. You could have a small problem, or a catastrophic one, but from this point on, you need someone who knows the workings of the system, as well as electrical knowledge to troubleshoot and fix the problem. Call Chapman Air & Heat at 214-340-4999 and a technician will be able to come out and tell you exactly what needs to be done. We also offer maintenance programs, to save you all these hassles by coming out at regular intervals and make sure your system is in the best shape possible.

Buying Air Conditioning for Dummies - Part 2

Recap from the last article - Here are the six components of your Air Conditioning System.

(1) Outdoor air cooled condenser or heat pump.
(2) Indoor evaporator coil, this device works in conjunction with the outdoor unit.
(3) Freon piping system connecting the outdoor condenser to the indoor evaporator.
(4) Indoor air handler (electric heat) or furnace (gas heat). They are the heating module and contain the blower providing the airflow for both heating and cooling.
(5) Air distribution system which consists of the ductwork, grilles and register.
(6) Air filtering or clean air component, i.e. whole house air purification system.

And So we Continue...

I should mention at this time, your HVAC system is most likely the largest energy consuming appliance in your home and competes with the automobile in producing pollutants that may have an adverse impact on our environment. The pollution is not seeping directly form your system but from the power plant producing the electricity for your AC unit. Finally, I would like for you to realize this acquisition for your home will be with you for a decade or more, so proceed with caution as all air conditioning units, furnaces or the installing contractors are NOT created equal and the decision you are about to make will be long lasting.

HVAC systems are purchased from and installed by heating and air conditioning contractors and the contractor is required by law to have a State License.  The State requires the contractor to maintain liability insurance and display their Name and License number on all trucks/vehicles in use of service or installing HVAC systems.

You will be buying your new HVAC system from a local installing contractor who will recommend an air conditioner and furnace unit brand such as Carrier, Trane, Lennox or a number of generic brands.  You might ask why some contractors recommend one brand over the other, well that’s simple, it is called dealerships. Just like the automobile industry the Ford dealer must meet Fords strict qualifications and most likely doesn’t sell Toyota who has its own specialized dealers and is a direct competitor. So most established HVAC contractors are a dealer of a premium brand, meaning they meet the requirements and training of the equipment manufacturer so, obviously that is the brand they will recommend. Some of these contractors will offer a premium brand with a generic offer for a lower price and promote it as being as good as the premium; the old bait and switch. The largest groupings of service contractors are the one or two men operations.  There is more small operators than large companies and they will recommend the generic brands because they don’t meet the major brands rigid qualifications. So, think on this for a while, and we will venture into the most important part next time.

Trane Rooftop Unit Hoist, with helicopter.

So yesterday morning - Early morning, we drove out to Grapevine Mills Mall, because Chapman Air was lifting Rooftop Units onto the roof of the Mall. We get there, there is this HUGE, bright red Helicopter, just sitting there waiting for us - EXCITING. So I jump out, get my camera ready and start snapping away. its not often that I am let out of the office onto the job sites, so I had to make the most of it.

Sirkosky S-58-t and she was a beut. 5 State Helicopters In provided the bird and pilots, and of course Trane provided the rooftop units, All being coordinated by Chapman Air & Heat, albeit fretfully - by Carla.

So I took a couple of still shots whilst the crews got everything settled and organized. Air Conditioning is no joke and they had to get all their equipment ready, positioned, though I don't envy them because the boss was along to watch this one, and he is a stickler for procedure and getting things done right - the first time. So after about 30 minutes everything was ready, and the HeliWhopper was fired up. You would not believe the wash that those rotters made. One technician's helmet was blown clean off, and he had to scurry to get it back - because safety first, and you do not want to be underneath a helicopter with no helmet on.

Within a matter of minutes, the pilot had the bird in the air, hoisting the Trane Rooftop units and depositing them on the roof, with an efficiency and speed that I could only admire. It is always a pleasure to work with people who know what they are doing, and these jocks knew their stuff. So 4 Roof top units - hoisted with great ease, and now I can die a happy man.

Chapman Air & Heat, they sure know their stuff.

Buying Air Conditioning for Dummies

**Warning; this is a boring document. However, if you can drudge thorough it, you will develop a better understanding of your home air conditioning & heating system. The purpose is to give you the knowledge (power) to select an Air Conditioning Contractor and equipment that will fit your family’s indoor comfort, budget and your home energy consumption.

Let’s start with a little background about this unappreciated appliance called central air conditioning. Yes, I said unappreciated because most likely your furnace is in some dark closet, damp basement or dirty attic and the A/C unit is outside hidden behind shrub or bush. The only part of the system you are familiar with is the thermostat.  The human need to control indoor comfort began way back during the Roman Empire but for us it was with Willis Carrier’s revolutionary new invention in the year of 1914; a system that would control temperature, humidity, air circulation, ventilation and cleanse the air. Now in the 21 Century this appliance provides indoor comfort for millions of American families.

First, you should know what you are buying is a central heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC, AC, air conditioning, heat pump, electric heating, furnace,) system that consist of six components:
(1) Outdoor air cooled condenser or heat pump.
(2) Indoor evaporator coil, this device works in conjunction with the outdoor unit.
(3) Freon piping system connecting the outdoor condenser to the indoor evaporator.
(4) Indoor air handler (electric heat) or furnace (gas heat). They are the heating module and contain the blower providing the airflow for both heating and cooling.
(5) Air distribution system which consists of the ductwork, grilles and register.
(6) Air filtering or clean air component, i.e. whole house air purification system.

Phew, done with the first part. Next we will be showing you how your HVAC system is most likely the largest energy consuming appliance in your home, and how you NEED to take a bit more time into making the right purchase.

Can Energy Savings Help your Marriage?

Can Energy Savings Help your Marriage?

reposted from http://energytipoftheday.com/

My wife and I have been trying to cut back on the budget lately.  A summer full of household projects, a vacation, and general “if you want it, buy it” attitude has left us a bit leaner in the bank account.  It’s not too bad, we didn’t go into debt, just depleted some of our savings.

As we reviewed our spending, it suddenly occurred to me . . . we haven’t had to worry about spiking energy bills in the summer and winter in over two years.  Prior to moving into our new home, we would have to account for a couple of HUGE electric bills in the summer and a couple of HUGE natural gas bills during the winter.  With our new, energy efficient,  all-electric home, that just doesn’t happen anymore.
I logged into my account at my electric utility and reviewed the last 12 months bills.  My average bill was $154, with the highest being $216 and the lowest $103.

Many of my friends routinely will see a $300-$400 electric bill during the summer and a $200+ bill during the winter.

Translation?

Because our bills are much lower and more predictable, the impact to our budget isn’t noticeable.  Sure, we could use levelized billing so that our bills didn’t spike, but it’s nice to know that our lower bills will result in fewer emergency budget “discussions” throughout the month.  This, of course, makes for a happier marriage in my household.

So, what can you do if you don’t already have an energy efficient home?  Call Chapman Air & Heat on 214-340-4999 and speak to one of our energy experts about the New, Greener and more efficient Trane XL20i

Giving the Running of the Bulls a Deeper Purpose

It is billed as the second biggest party in the world, just after Carnival in Rio.  Estimates say that 1.5 to 2 million people descend on this slice of northern Spain for 8 days of relaxation and revelry.  The event was actually founded in 1591 to honor the beheaded bishop, San Fermîn.  This is why everyone is asked to wear the red bandana, remembering his unfortunate end.  The festival itself is heavy with religious significance, and includes processions, special religious services, and a deep cultural reverence for the patron saint of Pamplona.  With that said, the Running of the Bulls has a well-earned reputation for non-stop revelry followed by mortal danger each morning as the bulls are run through the streets of ancient Pamplona.

I first ran with the bulls in 2004, not having any clue that there was a religious festival going on, nor did I know that the bulls run on eight consecutive days, not just the most famous day of July 7th.  Having returned to Pamplona to produce a documentary, study Spanish, and start a business, I now see the big picture and am amazed at what the Running of the Bulls has become.  Of course, anytime you gather 2 million in a town of about 700,000, lots of interesting things tend to happen.  That's why we strive to get above the crowd and rent a balcony to watch the running of the bulls from a safe distance.

It was such a fantastic experience that I decided to start a business offering bull runners and spectators housing, balconies, afternoon tapas and wine, and other amenities to help them enjoy the fiesta in style.  After a while, though, we felt that the party needed a purpose..  Relaxation is just fine, but we wanted to create a mechanism to do good while we had fun.  That's why we created Run With a Purpose (tm).  This program links vendors of balconies, apartments, and hotels in Pamplona with economic development projects in Latin America.

We have decided to award all proceeds from the Pamplona balcony rental business to projects of PersonalPhilanthropy.org.   PersonalPhilanthropy.org is a non-profit corporation and oversees all aspects of the programs, so you can rest assured that the money is well-used.  If you'd like to do good while having fun, consider taking the trip of a lifetime and join us at the Running of the Bulls 2010 in Pamplona this July 6th through 14th.
